Pit Bull Regulation is Nonsense

Anyone enacting Breed Specific Law has too little knowledge and too much power. Tragic situations result when current laws are unenforced. More laws are not the solution. Education, and prosecution when appropriate, are the keys.
Get involved and stop the spread of Breed Specific Laws in Wisconsin. Here's a partial list of municipalities that are in need of better information from knowledgeable, sane dog lovers.

I'm 100% in favor of banning pit bulls. This is a dangerous breed, due in part to the types of owners it has (think gang-bangers, thugs, etc.), but also due to its inherently aggressive genetic code. Both of these things together makes for one nasty, nasty dog.

Check this out:

Says Katherine Houpt, director of the Animal Behavior Clinic at Cornell and author of Domestic Animal Behavior: "Different breeds have genetic predispositions to certain kinds of behavior, though that can be influenced by how they are raised. The pit bull is an innately aggressive breed, often owned by someone who wants an aggressive dog, so they're going to encourage it."

Pit bulls have been bred specifically to be aggressive. They're descended from the now- extinct old English "bulldogge," a big, tenacious breed used in the brutal early- nineteenth-century sport of bull baiting, in which rowdy spectators watched dogs tear apart an enraged bull. Victorian reformers, concerned about the coarsening effect bull baiting had on its devotees, banned it by the early 1830s, but enterprising bull baiters merely migrated to an equally bloody sport: organized dog fighting.

Sorry, folks ... pit bulls have got to go!

Wow. Shocker. Stupid comments are typically left anonymously. Often they include a quote by someone with a great title but not legitimate experience.
As always I welcome your comments, no matter how unfounded.
Attended the meeting tonight in Cudahy to tell the council what you think of their proposed ban of pit bulls.

I agree 100% with Amy People like that need to be educated on the subject. Again I say Its the responsibably of the owner to train these dogs and keep them safe!!!!!!! Any dog can be trained to be mean

First, the reason I'm anonymous is because I don't wish to take the time to register.

Second, as far as quoting someone with a fancy title is concerned, the reason it's fancy is because she *earned* it. My god, the woman is a director at Cornell, as well as an author on domestic animal behavior. To foolishly wave her off as "stupid" shows ignorance on your part. I come at you with facts about the innate aggressiveness of pit bulls (of which a simple Google search will turn up a mass amount of hits), and you reply with a silly "such nonesense" comment. Care to back up this "research" of yours with data, as opposed to emotion?

And as to Missie's comment, please, be my guest: venture into the inner-city and start educating these pit owners. Let me know where you're going to begin, too. By telling them to license their fighting dog? By telling them that dog fighting is illegal? To tell them to raise their pit with love?

But let me remind you, these laws are already in place. You have to license your pit, you aren't allowed to conduct dog fights, and, though not a law, you should raise your dog with love. Best of luck to you in your efforts.

Missie, in any statistical chart, you have your averages, and you have those numbers that fall outside of the averages. Sure, there are some good pit bulls, but the majority of pits -- i.e., the averages -- fall within the nastiness chunk. Lastly, remember this: since 1979, one-third of all dog bites are by pit bulls.

So Missie and Amy, you two have not even come close to convincing me that pit bulls should not be banned. I stand firm: keep 'em out of my city, thank you very much!

My direct EXPERIENCE is with dog owners and dogs of all types, thus I can say with certainty, pit bulls are as fine a breed as any. Perhaps after 33 years MORE experience, I'll appreciate your opinion. Hold your breathe!

"First, the reason I'm anonymous is because I don't wish to take the time to register" Perhaps those who hide behind the mask of anonymity should be banned (but not their dogs). More than a few city and county attorneys have come out with decisions that any breed specific banning laws are unconstitutional. They are also stupid products of ignorance. Dog owners need to be responsible, that is obvious.

People are injured by cars, but we do not blame or ban cars. People are injured by horses. No ban of the animal tried. Some people are allergic to cats. No cities ban cats.

Any anti-pit bull scheme is ignoring the actual problems caused by irresponsible people. A waste of time, money and ideas.

To the m: once again, since 1979, *one-third* of all dog bites are by pit bulls. Think about that for a moment. Out of all the dogs out there, and all the different breeds, one-third is by one specific breed alone -- the pit bull.

So while you're chewing on that for a bit (no pun intended), it's unusual how you and everyone else on here conveniently neglect to address the issue of the pit bull's genetic make-up for aggression. This is a dog that was bred for nastiness. Just like retrievers were bred for retrieving, and border collies were bred for bordering herds, the pit bull was bred to be a mean little monster -- and that it is!

So in reply to your analogies of why we don't ban horses or cars or cats, the answer has to do with numbers and frequencies. With one-third of all dog bites by one breed along -- the pit bull -- we are seeing a distinct problem here. People aren't getting bitten by cats with this frequency; people aren't getting injured by horses with this frequency.

Furthermore, you combine the pit bull's genetic make-up for aggression with the type of owner who looks for that in a dog (as I mentioned earlier, the thugs, gang-bangers, drug dealers, etc.) and you are in for one violent concoction. The two are extremely volatile.

So because I hide behind the mask of "anonymity," I should be banned? For what reason, because I present facts that don't mix well with your emotions toward this breed? Because you don't like what I have to say (which, by the way, I'm keeping my replies as factual as possible and not making person attacks), you want me removed? Anonymity, my friend, can bring out the truth. Next time you vote, ask yourself why it's done in private.

The person using the name "anonymous" is what is called a "troll". An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial and stupid messages in an online community, such as an online blog or discussion forum, with the intention of baiting other users into a response and to generally disrupt intelligent discussion.
Many participants online know that the most effective way to discourage a troll is usually to ignore him or her, because responding encourages a troll to continue ignorant posts. An often-seen warning "Please do not feed the troll".

It was okay that Anonymous posted illogical comments, but now they've turned mean. Therefore, he's been officially banned from posting here anonymously. May I suggest Anonymous chose another target. Perhaps he can search his neighborhood for a youngster peddling down the street and push her off her bike. I'm sure he'll find that enormously satisfying.
