Support Wisconsin Senate Bill 162

The link between domestic violence and animal abuse has been proven. Abusers typically practice on animals before people. The pattern of violence frequently extends to the abuse their human victim's pets. Pretty creative and diabolical when you think about it. Threatening someone's pet by saying, "If you think about leaving I'm going to kill your dog," is a VERY effective form of manipulation.

Therefore, to give victims further options to prosecute their abusers Senators Risser, Carpenter and Lassa introduced Wisconsin Senate Bill 162, with the support of cosponsors Representatives Hines, Berceau, Travis, Musser, Sinicki, Albers, Hraychuck and Hixson.

Sunday, July 29, 2007 I will discuss the details of the important changes this bill includes. Megan Senatori, founder of Wisconsin United for Furry Friends and attorney with Dewitt Ross & Stevens joins me on "Your Family Pet" WRRD am540 The Word from 3-3:30pm. Megan Senatori will explain the purpose of the bill.

Follow-up on WTKI "Ask an Expert" segment

Able the Dancing Chihuahua and I joined Erin, AJ and Mathew yesterday on WKTI fm94.5, "Mathew Blades in the Morning" show. We were welcomed warmly by everyone at the station and, remarkably, no one asked why I brought a dog to a radio show.

There were so many patient callers I stayed to answer do questions after the segment ended. Unfortunately, the morning show needed the phone line and I had to leave some calls unanswered. If you have a question, call Amiable Dog Training at 414-213-5464.

Where's Able the Dancing Dog?

Alyssa, who is apparently a fan of Able the Dancing Dog, wrote to ask where he will be performing. Unfortunately my reply was returned, so I thought I'd post it here.

Hi Alyssa,

So nice of you to ask about Able. You are right, we won't be at State Fair this
year. Able has two pending/unconfirmed appearences scheduled. One is at the
Companion's Rest Pet Fair (on 27th and Cold Spring) on August 19 and the other
is at Bark in the Park (at Washington Prk) on August 12.

If you like I'll email you if those are confirmed. I will also post them on my
blog.

Free pets? Expensive lessons

Are you kids begging to get a pet? This is a great opportunity to teach important life lessons about responsibilities, proper care, kindness, love, and money. Taking the time to educate your kids on the true cost of pet ownership may not turn them into a regular reader of Investor's Business Daily or inspire even a spark of curiousity about why mom and dad can't afford to give them everything they ask for. Still, if your kids want a dog or any pet, check out the Texas Society of Public Certified Accountants website to download a copy of "The True Cost of Owning a Pet." It covers how to anticipate and prioritize expenses, and develop a budget and method of payment. In fact, regarless of your age, this is a valuable worksheet when determining if you can afford a pet. If you doubt me just ask anyone with a free pet if it truly was "free."

Biking clinic at Yappy Hour

The following day, Friday July 27, 2007 from 6-8pm, pack up your hound and bring him to Yappy Hour at Amiable Dog Training in Greenfield. In addition to the usual social time and $5 toenail trims, Amy will be doing a mini clinic on how to bike with your dog. See the technique featured in "Hip Ideas for Hyper Dogs" in person. Think your dog is going to get tangled in the spokes and you'll be flat on your back? Then you'll be amazed how most dogs learn to follow nicely along side a bike in just minutes.

Dogs and Thunderstorms

Need some help for your phobic Fido? Here are the tips I gave during my recent appearance on Fox 6 Wake-up Milwaukee.

Calm Your Canine’s Fear of Thunderstorm and Fireworks

1. Don’t pet, coddle, or act worried when your dog is stressed.

2. Do distract him with treats or happy talk.

3. Desensitize irrational fear by practicing commands around various noises.

4. Dull unsettling noise with a fan or air conditioner.

5. Allow your dog to hide out in the basement or bathtub.
